Quick Take:

  • Trump plans to announce in the near future that Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be replaced with Reginald F. Lewis Day, honoring the first Black billionaire.
  • He calls MLK a “top-five” icon, even mulling a Mount Rushmore swap, but picks Lewis as a symbol of business genius.
  • Proponents cheer the focus on Black wealth creation; critics, aka every Democrat, scream racism and “race hustle” sabotage.
  • A glitzy ceremony with Black billionaires like Rihanna and Michael Jordan is set to take place, backed by the Black Barber Commission (BBC).
  • Trump’s also tossing around a Malcolm X birthday combo holiday, which everyone agrees is a terrible idea.

In another unprecedented decision, President Trump is canning Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a new holiday honoring Reginald F. Lewis, the first African American to build a billion-dollar empire.

Why? Because Trump wants to “make Black billionaires great again.”

Trump’s no MLK hater, far from it. He calls the civil rights icon “top five, maybe top three, nobody gave a better speech, that ‘I Have a Dream’ was huge.” He’s so serious, he’s whispering about removing Teddy Roosevelt from Mount Rushmore for MLK, saying, “My team’s looking into it, because without MLK, America’s not great, and I’m all about great.”

But Lewis? “A genius businessman, fantastic, really great great guy,” Trump said. Lewis, who turned Beatrice International into a billion-dollar juggernaut, is Trump’s pick to inspire Black wealth creation.

Supporters are eating it up. They argue MLK Day’s become a performative snooze-fest, with corporations and politicians recycling “I have a dream” quotes like TikTok dance challenges. “It’s anti-progress,” one fan claims. “Lewis shows Black kids how to stack cash, not just march.”

The Black Barber Commission, yep, the BBC, gives a fresh fade and a full endorsement, buzzing about economic empowerment. The Black Republican Caucus, aka Tim Scott and Byron Donald’s, high-fives the idea, with Scott tweeting, “Billionaires, and borders!”

But the backlash? Every Democrat, their interns, and their therapy dogs call it a “racist, supremacist plot.” The NAACP’s screaming, “Blasphemy!” while the 117-member Black Democratic Caucus fumes that it’ll kill their January “race hustle,” where they polish progressive badges with MLK memes.

One Dem rages, “This is peak Trump, bizarre and unhinged.” Meanwhile, Trump’s Malcolm X birthday mashup idea (May 19, 1925) gets universal condemnation, with anonymous aids sharing, “Not his finest hour.”

The Black Billionaire Bash promises Black billionaire star power, Rihanna showing off her ultra-successful Fenty Brand, Michael Jordan providing gambling tips, and Robert Smith maybe explaining tax loopholes. It’s a capitalist BET Awards, anticipated to take place at Mar-a-Lago.

Trump’s dreaming of “100 Black billionaires by 2029.” Will this holiday swap fly or flop? Love it or hate it, Trump’s got us talking about it.
